What is Micro Needling?

Updated: Jul 5, 2018

Micro needling creates microscopic punctures in the skin.

Micro needling (also known as collagen induction therapy, Dermaroller or Dermapen) is an innovative treatment providing a solution to fine lines, wrinkles, scars and acne scars as well as providing an overall improvement to skin condition, tone and texture. It scientifically reduces fine lines, plumps the skin and fades scarring by causing controlled trauma to the skin triggering a release of growth factors, an increase in collagen production and elasticity in the skin.

The procedure uses small needles to create tiny punctures in the skin which triggers our natural wound healing response to renew skin cells, produce collagen and stimulate elastin. By creating tiny punctures, it also creates superficial micro-channels that allow topical serums, and creams to be absorbed more effectively into the skin. But if the thought of multiple needle wounds sounds slightly disturbing, rest assured, the punctures are more like pin-pricks that enter only skin deep.

I use the Dermafix automated micro needling device which is much more versatile than the traditional rollers. Traditional rollers have a fixed needle length or penetration depth, which means you can't tailor the treatment to target different thickness of skin tissue like you can with an automated pen device. This means that I can treat the thinner, more delicate skin (under eye, eyelids, crows feet) to get an even better result!

The automated design also eliminates the drag you get with a roller, protecting the new skin

cell growth providing quicker healing. However, I do use the roller when treating stretch marks as the surface area tends to be bigger, so the rollers are more efficient.

The skin's repair process results in a thicker dermis with the appearance of softer wrinkles, lumped skin and faded scars.

Micro needling treatment can help to improve the appearance of:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Open pores

  • Improves skin texture

  • Ageing skin

  • Pigmentation/uneven skin tone

  • Acne scarring

  • Body/surgery scars

  • Stretch marks

  • Crows feet

  • Sagging skin

Micro needling offers immediate results.

You will have redness immediately after the treatment which can linger for a day or two. Following the treatment the skin will look plump, tight and luminous for a couple of weeks.

But micro needling also promises improvement over time.

Rejuvenation of the skin may be seen as soon as a week and as long as six months after the procedure.

According to a 2008 study, skin treated with four micro needling sessions spaced

one month apart produced up to a 400% increase in collagen and elastin six months after completing treatment. Result!
